A Capital Offense

castroinbluejeans.jpgOkay, we're at the final four now, which means we should be treated to some pretty powerful performing, right? Then how come I'm getting the feeling that at least one of the contestants thinks the whole competition is a joke? Seriously, after last night's show, I asked my husband if Jason Castro could possibly be one of those "joke auditioners" that somehow went terribly wrong, slipping through the auditioning process and being embraced by the public without caring a lick about winning the competition or even recording at all? Sure, he has killer eyes and his reggae/folk roots set him apart from the crowd, but he just doesn't seem to care about any of it. Even worse, it sometimes feels like the whole competition is keeping him from doing something really important (be that smoking some righteous buds or catching the ultimate wave or anything other than what he's doing).

I could be wrong, of course. Maybe Jason just isn't of the caliber that should make up the final four. Either way, he should be leaving after last night's performance. Any other choice would just be so unfair.

Which is not to say any of them had a particularly stellar night. My favorite, David Cook, was unimpressive on "Hungry Like the Wolf" and only slightly better at "Baba O'Riley." I agree with Paula and Simon - Syreta's second song, "A Change Gonna Come," was a showstopper, but her Tina Turner impersonation was tepid at best. David A. took the night with standards "Love Me Tender" and "Stand By Me," but even he failed to show anything new.

It was a night of great potential and, unfortunately, great disappointment. But ultimately, Jason's time has come.
