Adios, Idol Hopefuls

Am I good, or am I good? Using my psychic powers, I correctly predicted that Joanne and Amy would be voted off on last night’s American Idol results show, and I was absolutely correct. I also predicted that Farrah-haired Garret Haley would be given the boot, and again, I was right. One small hiccup in my psychic prowess was the Colton Berry vote-off…hey, if you want 100% accuracy, call the Psychic Friends Hotline or something! I get paid to write, not predict, dammit!

I must say that I was a little shocked that Colton got the boot. I was sure it would be Luke Menard, after his snore-inducing performance. But alas, I was wrong. I guess America wasn’t ready for a theatrical Ellen look-a-like. Simon wasted no time telling Colton to get a real job and pursue singing only for fun and not as a profession (way to dash the dreams of hopeful youth, Simon. How do you sleep at night??!).

I was also a little shocked at how many of the remaining Idols were in tears after the results were announced. I can somewhat understand shedding tears if you’re in, say, the final 5 or 6 and someone is voted off; at that point you have spent months with your fellow karaoke singers, er, competitors, and there has been time to bond, blah blah blah. But at this point, why the waterworks?? You cant tell me they bonded THAT much in Hollywood week. And they’ve been on hiatus since then, so unless they all exchanged numbers and kept in close contact, how close could they have gotten?? Maybe the girls were just PMSing and therefore over-emotional, or maybe they were secretly crying cus they were happy THEY weren’t the ones going home and they were trying to pass it off as sadness over their competition being given their walking papers. Who knows. It just seemed a little melodramatic to me.

So we’re down to 20 now, with next week promising to showcase more of “the best talent we’ve ever seen on American Idol”. I’m still waiting to be impressed. There’s some talent, yeah, but the best we’ve ever seen?? Has everyone forgotten Season 5?? Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry, Katharine McPhee, Mandisa, Paris Bennett…they were great! Even Soul Patrol-er Taylor Hicks had me entertained a few times. I’m just not yet buying the idea that this year is the best ever. I guess time will tell.

PS – Thoughts on Paula’s new music video that we were forced to watch in its entirety last night?? The song wasn’t completely horrible, but it wasn’t good either. It sorta reeked of desperation. Paula should be content knowing we liked her in the 80s…and that some of us still sing along loudly and unashamedly to “Straight Up” when we’re driving…I’m not naming names, I’m just saying! Holler if you liked the video…or if you didn’t. I wonder if Debbie Gibson will consider a comeback now….
