American Idol Does John Lennon Proud

Last night’s American Idol was, for the most part, a suckfest. The boys tried, and I give them an “A” for effort….but unfortunately effort doesn’t always cut it. (Prime example: Paula Abdul’s new music video…ick).

I will say that I was surprised that some of last week’s worst ended up being last night’s best. Luke and Chikezie both gave muuuuuch better performances than last week. And Chikezie ditched the crazy-colored leisure suit look…thank the Lord (or the Wardrobe Gods).

Anyway, since most of the boys failed to tickle my fancy, I’m going to focus on the only one that really mattered last night: David Archuleta.

Christmas came early last night as Santa – in the form of Ryan Seacrest – unveiled to the world a virtuoso performance on an on otherwise bleak and dreary Boys Night. Equal parts Barbra Streisand, Huck Finn, John Lennon and Beaver Cleaver, David Archuleta reminded us that talent knows no boundaries; it isn’t restricted by age, race, gender or looks…thankfully.

David’s talent rose up last night and slapped America in our collective faces, demanding to be recognized. Taking a risk in choosing the beautifully anthemic “Imagine”, the Boy Wonder might not have had the impact of the Beatles’ debut on Sullivan, but he certainly made the Liverpool legends proud. Lets hold onto this moment, America, because its not often that a new, fresh talent splashes onto the scene in the form of an innocent 17-year-old, full of “Aw shucks” and blushing smiles. If the past (OK, and the present) has taught us anything, its that in twenty years the kids we once cooed over will be headlining their own True Hollywood Story wherein they painstakingly (yet entertainingly) recount their three-week cocaine-induced sex binges with Lindsay Lohan and the cast of “Rock of Love”. David Archuleta will have none of that. Today, he reigns supreme. Yes, Virginia, Opie can blow. And the world is a little more beautiful because of it.

Tonight, the girls will attempt to deliver performances that outshine David’s…but honestly, I don’t think its possible. Still, we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt…and in the meantime, we’ll play the YouTube video of Opie’s “Imagine” rendition til we’re all filled with John Lennon’s peaceful hope for the world. OK, please someone pass me a tissue!!
