And Then There Were Ten

RIP, Elvira Overmyer. You were a breath of fresh air at the beginning of Idol, but over the weeks you unfortunately revealed yourself to be what we feared all along: a one-trick pony. I liked you at the on-set....but somewhere between Paula's music video and Opie forgetting his lyrics, you morphed into a scarily manly performer, and when you weren't too busy imitating Elvis as you chickendanced your way across the stage, you're voice was, at best, scratchy and off-key, not to mention almost incoherently slurred (I realize dealing with Seacrest on a weekly basis probably drove you to hit the sauce, tho, so I'm not knockin' you for that). But dont worry....if you could survive being hit by a semi-truck, I'm sure you can survive being shamefully kicked off the world's largest karaoke competition, voted off by millions of Americans who dont know you and, apparently, dont like you, left to head back to some dimly lit dive bar in Indiana where you can sing Janis Joplin to a group of bikers equally as smashed as you will most undoubtedly be, while the rest of your AI pals kick up their heels on a national summer tour, making good cash and being adored by legions of fans.....actually, maybe that semitruck is lookin' pretty good right now, huh??

Semitrucks aside, it was sayonara to Amanda "Elvira" Overmyer last night on Idol. The drunken Indiana biker contingency just wasn't large enough for their votes to keep her in the competition. I dont think anyone is particularly shocked by this, as Amanda has failed to impress for the last few weeks. She's only skated by because people like Stripper Hernandez and Country Lee Cook managed to suck muuuuuuuch worse than she did, not because her performances were anything to write home about. The biggest shock of the night came when Carly "The Ringer" Smithson was the first sent into the Bottom Three.

Let me say here and now that I am tickled pink that Carly was in the Bottom Three. Does she have a great voice? Absolutely. No doubt about it. The problem is, she knows she does, and her ego has been getting a little too big for my taste lately. (Not to mention the fact that I, and millions of others like me, believe she's nothing more than a plant by AI producers, set in the Top 10 to hopefully win and become the next Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, because we all know that more often than not, the AI winner doesn't actually go on to much mainstream commercial success, and Carly is marketable and talented, blah blah blah. But, I digress). She seemed appropriately shocked, and I think its a good thing. Next week her best bet would be to tone the ego down a few notches and just shut up and sing.

The rest of the evening was more of the same: silly pre-taped video of the Top 11 singing "Should I Stay Or Should I Go", typical high-drama "results after the commercial" Seacrest torture, typical bad group song at the beginning of the show (with the exception of "Because", which sounded lovely).

Next week, Kristy better come up with some way to show some personality and pick a song that she can sing the hell out of, or she's in danger of being the next to pack her bags. On the brightside, she's now officially in the Top 10 and therefore will be a part of the summer tour, so it looks like she'll be able to buy her horse back after all. (However, If I were that horse's new owner, I'd charge her double as a penalty for making me listen to the country "Eight Days A Week"....twice! But, thats just me!!)
