Are the Losers the Real Winners?

I mentioned yesterday that we like out third-place finishers. My thoughts are echoed over at the National Post.

The article "Canadian Idol: Second Opinion – Is it better to lose?" looks at the success of Hedley and the lack of success encountered by many of the winners. Perhaps the exposure from the show followed by the freedom to carve out a career free from restrictive contracts is more conducive to industry respect and subsequent success. It's certainly worth considering.

Given that stardom is far from guaranteed, what does a winner get from the Idol experience? Lots of public exposure from the tv show, a summer tour with the top 10, a restrictive recording contract with an approved label, a debut album (and single) but little control over what goes on it, interviews and other live appearances, more interviews and heavy pressure to succeed quickly.

What can the second to ninth place finishers look forward to? Lots of public exposure from the tv show, a summer tour with the top 10, freedom to choose any recording contracts that come (and they usually do), freedom to take their career in their own direction at their own pace.

Read the article here.

What do you think? Is the exposure without the win a better career launch?
