Blake Lewis - Audio Day Dream

Stop what you are doing, go to Amazon.com and purchase Blake Lewis' album, Audio Day Dream. OK, wait until you're done reading this, and THEN go buy the album.

Its no secret that you don't have to win American Idol to have success (remember Taylor Hicks?? Yeah, neither do we). Plenty of AI alums have had mainstream success, and I was sure Blake would be one of them. Electro-funk-pop meets special effects meets 80's mixtape, Audio Day Dream is a fun (and slighly manic) peek into Lewis' wide musical tastes. Its a little bit old-school (and, at times, a little all over the place!) but somehow it works. Don't believe me? Head over to YouTube, iTunes, or Amazon and check out sample clips from the album. Lewis co-wrote 12 of the tracks (not a small feat in the land of producer-written ditties recorded by wannabes who only want their 15 minutes of fame) and his musical stamp is clear on almost every song. And dont worry, his trademark beatboxing isn't all over the album...he used it sparingly, in all the right places.

I love good music, period. Genre doesn't matter, decade of origin, language....good music is good music. My music collection (which is in the thousands by now) includes some of almost anything. Almost. No polka. At least not yet. But I'm open to it! So my point is, be open enough to check out his album...and have some respect for the fact that the guy didn't stick to just one sound, one genre, one box. Anyone who refuses to define themself by someone else's limits gets two thumbs-up from me...especially if those limits could've been set by Clive Davis himself! See you on Billboard, Blake.
