Okay, jumping in here with the good, the bad and the ugly....and my predictions (totally unsolicited, uneducated and unspoilered) as to who will be going on to the top twelve.
First, the guys...my favorite this week - surprising even myself - was David Cook rocking out Lionel Richie's "Hello." I don't like the song - and up to this week, I didn't particularly like the singer - but Cook give the rest of the competition an example of what "make it your own" is all about. Well done, and he deserves to move on.
A close second goes to Jason Castro, whose performance of "Hallelujah" was clean, fresh and austere, letting the song shine for itself. I liked it as much as Simon did.
Unfortunately, these were the only two "highlight performances" in my book. David Archuleta was decent doing Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise" but let's face it - Collins is no Lennon, and Archuleta's performance seemed to emphasize that, compared to his stand-out performance last week. Still, he has a huge fan base and should easily slide into a top twelve spot.
The rest were simply fair-to-middlin'. I mean, when the most memorable thing about your performance is your pre-stage booger story, you know you're in trouble. Still, I'll go out on a limb right here and predict that pretty boy Luke Menard (not the booger guy - his embarrassment was dressing like a ballerina), who was saddled with the forgettable first slot and didn't overwhelm us with Wham, will be "go-going" before he can wake us up. And, if there was any justice in this world, he'd take the purple-tressed Danny Noreiga along with him.
As for the girls, 80's night had two standouts for me. Brooke White totally made "Love is a Battlefield" her own, more "love" and less "battlefield," and it was beautiful in its simplicity. Let's hope it doesn't fade to white in the minds of the voters.
Also, Amanda Overmyer totally rocked on Joan Jett's "I Hate Myself For Loving You." (Remember when Joey sang this on "Dawson's Creek"? And doesn't Luke Menard look like a dark-haired Dawson? Sorry, I digress...) Anyway, shedding the spirit of Joplin and embracing this ditty may prove a smart move for Amanda....and, let's face it, with the bevy of bland blondes, this show needs a bit of edgy.
The blonde wave didn't do it for me this week, and I predict two of them will be headed outta here. Which two? If there's any justice, we'll be saying bye bye bye to Kady Malloy and Kristy Lee Cook...both totally beautiful and totally blah.
