Idol Speculation

I swore I wasn't going to make predictions. Seriously, I did. I've been way too accurate since the Idol Speculation began...you know I'm bound to fall on my face sometime.

But it hasn't happened yet. Just sayin'.

So last night was all about inspiring. And I have to tell ya, I really wasn't, much. All the singers I've come to count on let me down last night.

For example, Michael Johns. He was killer the week before, but only so-so with his version of "Dream On." Actually, I was rocking right with him until he tried Steven Tyler's patented scream at the end. Oh Michael. There are reasons why such things are patented. But at least his fall wasn't as far as some (I'm looking at you, David Cook).

Next up was Syesha, who did a decent job of taking on Fantasia's "I Believe." But the judges were right to point out she didn't connect with the song like Miss F does, nor did she bring that certain something to make this song stellar. Unfortunately, it seems Syesha is running out of steam, and time may be running out on her.

Jason Castro. Okay, I get it. His version of "Over the Rainbow," complete with ukulele, was certainly a special moment. I'd even rank it as better than Katharine McPhee's showstopping rendition of the same tune. But I'm a purist when it comes to my "Rainbow." Still, he was best of show tonight.

And, even without benefit of flag-waving, Kristy Lee Cook held her own. Her take of the Martina McBride classic "Anyway" seemed to suit this country crooner perfectly - or at least good enough to earn another week.

And then, David Cook. He did a song I never heard before, "Innocent," which seemed more self-serving than inspiring. He seemed really full of himself throughout, even holding up his hand, on which he had written "Give Back" (channeling Bono on all counts). Simon was right on the mark when he called the whole spectacle "pompous."

Carly Smithson took the stage looking lovely (am I sounding like Paula?). Well, that was as good as it gets. She took on Freddie Mercury's "The Show Must Go On," but really, it should have died with Freddie. Simon was worried for her future....and yeah, me too.

And following suit, David Archuletta was just okay, too. It was a safe performance, and the song choice, Robbie Williams' "Angel," may have been best of the night. There just weren't any chills, any swelling eyes, or any lump in the throat (I mean me, of course...David's good, but I don't expect him to sing with a lump in his throat).

Finally, Brooke White sang the Carole King version of "You've Got A Friend." And, though it was no "Let It Be," it was a nice, safe choice. Coupled with that coveted final spot, our Miss Brooke should be safe tonight.

So, then, who will be mounting the Coke stools? I'm predicting you'll see Carly, Syeesha and Kristy a-sitting up there. They're certainly not the worst of the night, but if you combine their performances, their fan bases and their order of appearance, it just adds up. As for who's going, I'll play it safe and say Syeesha, though Carly is a definite possibility. Kristy has improved too much to go right now....at least, I hope!
