Mitch Stayed True to Mitch

Theo is proud that he stayed true to himself throughout the competition, and Mitch is echoing a similar sentiment. While graciously conceding the Idol crown to his friend, Mitch has been one of the most eloquent and upbeat second-place finishers in a long while. He's confident that we'll be hearing plenty more from him in the near future.

"I'm just so, so happy for Theo. Theo has worked so hard for this and every time he's just bang on. He's got massive vocals and he just really deserves to win this," said MacDonald, shortly after the finale.

"For me I came into this with a plan either way kind of thing. If I come second, I've got to make sure I'm on the game, so I know where to go next musically. I've talked to some great people and hopefully I'll be putting out a record in the near future as well so really it's all good for me. I'm happy to finish second. It's cool."

But it didn't mean there wasn't a few butterflies in MacDonald's stomach as he was waiting for host Ben Mulroney to read the results on Wednesday night's star-studded finale.

"I was just thinking 'what happens if I win?' You don't even know what's going on. It's just like it's really hard to explain. It's so overwhelming and when he said 'Theo' I was just so happy for Theo because Theo gets so worked up that I was like scared if he didn't win," said MacDonald with a laugh.

The affable MacDonald stayed true to his East Coast roots right from the beginning and chose lesser-known songs that suited his voice and meant something to him.

"I came in that first audition saying that I was going to stick to my guns and at the half way point I was going crazy, didn't know what I was doing and then I did all my rehearsals with some other song and at the last minute I changed it to (Joel Plaskett's) 'Love This Town' and that was the turning point for me where I really wanted to be here because I knew I could stick to my guns."
