Simple Plan Chat "Idol"

Simple Plan sat down for an interview to discuss their mentoring experiencing with the contestants on Canadian-rock week. One thing I immediately noticed was how close in age the band is to the Idols. While they've tasted the success the contestants only dream of, the gap between them isn't nearly as significant as, say, Tom Jones and Mookie. You know what I mean.

Lead vocalist Pierre Bouvier, drummer Chuck Comeau and guitarist Sebastien Lefebvre mentored the Idols this week as part of "Canadian Rock" week and sat down with idol.ctv.ca to talk about the experience.

"In a way you can kind of see yourself, even though we came from a different world, but it was cool to see the dream that they have because I think when we started out playing in bands and all that we had the same dreams to tour and make records so it's kind of cool to see how optimistic they are about what they can achieve and all that," said Comeau.

"They're all very, very nice people. Super talented, they all can sing really well and most of them can play an instrument as well," said Lefebvre.

But Bouvier admits the whole mentoring thing was a little intimidating at first.

"We didn't really know how they were going to integrate us into the show, we're like, 'How is this going to work, is it going to be awkward or a little bit weird?' but as soon as the first guy went through, Earl, we were like, 'This is going to be easy, this is fun.' We can just relax and enjoy the show and watch these people that are super talented do their thing and just give our comments."

The band, which also includes David Desrosiers on bass and Jeff Stinco on lead guitar, gave the Idols some tips on performing, from being comfortable on stage to whether their performances were coming across as genuine.

"The big thing, too, was don't forget to be yourself. At some point the show will push you in different directions but at the same time you need to know who you are as an artist and it's hard for them because they're just getting started but it's important to know that and just sort of stick to it," said Comeau.

The band said they were flattered to be asked to mentor the Idols, especially during a week that showcases the best of "Canadian Rock."

"Yeah for us it's just flattering to be on that show. I think if someone asked us, 'Hey we want your comments' it's like oh, wow, people actually care what we think, awesome," said Bouvier.
