Sunshine On Her Shoulders: Carly Rae Jepsen

carly.jpgCarly Rae Jepsen finished third on Canadian Idol last year. She just released her new single "Sunshine On My Shoulders" (yes, the John Denver tune) and is ready to take the Canadian music scene by storm. And if Jacob Hoggard's success is any indication, we like our third-place finishers.

According to her MySpace bio:

After completing the Telus Presents Canadian Idol Top 3 concert tour, Carly Rae retreated to B.C. to focus on writing, recording and completing her band. Her demos attracted a flurry of attention, causing a managerial bidding war. She eventually signed a joint management deal with Simkin Artist Management, and Dexter Entertainment. A deal with Fontana/Maple Music quickly followed, leading Carly Rae into the studio with producer Ryan Stewart. The debut single, “Sunshine On My Shoulders”, will hit Canadian radio on June 16th, 2008. The only cover song on the album, the single showcases Carly Rae’s ability to create mesmerizing vocal melodies and mood shifts in her songs. Sunshine was a favorite childhood song, and is now Carly Rae’s point of departure into a new recording career.

Influenced by fellow artists like Feist, Corrine Bailey Rae, Rickie Lee Jones, and Ella Fitzgerald, Carly Rae writes and performs an upbeat style of organic pop that is irresistible and unforgettable.

Be sure to head on over and check out her new music. And then add her as a friend.

And for those of you wondering why her first single (and only cover on the album) is a Denver song, she explains over at CTV:

"It just happened that I was at this party and we were all kind of reminiscing about childhood songs and that came up that that was mine and I was like, 'Someone should redo that song' and I thought well, 'Why don't I redo that song?'" says Jepsen.

"I think it's just sort of a nice celebration of summer and it's also one of those songs, I think it's kind of got those lyrics like an old jazz song that can go deeper but if you want to it can just be really like a feel good, happy summer song as well."

I hear sunshine is trendy ("Pocketful of Sunshine," anyone?). As is nostalgia. Perhaps she has a winning combination.

    Hey there,

Thanks for posting about Carly. I heard her song Tug Of War on radio the other day and now its been playing a lot! I did not know she was from Idol. Usually Idol people do not make it far but it seems like she is doing well and is going to do well for herself! Maybe the next Canadian Singer?! Gosh do we ever need on here in Canada! : )
