So, I'm sitting at my computer, staring at the cover of my copy of The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics by Alan Aldridge, hoping for inspiration on what to write tonight (as if staring at caricature drawings of the Fab Four will somehow inspire eloquence!) and unfortunately, its just not working. Don't blame the Beatles, tho....blame American Idol, and their failure--once again--to consistently deliver up the goods.
I'll say here and now that I dont think a second Beatles night was the best choice. The contestants butchered enough of the sacred Lennon/McCartney songbook last week, and I wasn't in any hurry to endure a second night of torture (in fact, I'm pretty sure prisoners of war don't even have to suffer that much). There were a few standout performances, I'll admit: Syesha sang "Yesterday", and it was pretty. Opie Archuleta waaaaaaay redeemed himself from last week's hideousness with "The Long and Winding Road". And as much as I hate admitting this, I actually liked David Cook's performance of "Daytripper"....tho I half-expected Peter Frampton to join him on-stage for the voice box bit in the middle (like a second Geico commercial....yes! That woulda been awesome!). And thats it.....only three people impressed me. Three performances that I even semi-enjoyed. Count 'em: one, two, three. The rest just.....well, again, they sucked. Seriously, guys......stop sucking! Its not that hard! (And Kristy, that goes out to you in particular....no "blowing the socks off" Simon or Randy or anyone else, for that matter! Geez!)
Oh, and contestants, dont think I didn't notice that none of you had the cajones to take up my challenge and sing "Strawberry Fields". Tsk tsk. I'm very disappointed in all of you. What, was Holly running amok backstage again and distracting you from making good song choices this week?? What's your excuse? Are producers secretly chaining you to the walls and making you listen to Paula's "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" on loop?? (Oh God, that would be an almost unthinkable punishment, wouldn't it?!) Next week, I expect more than a 1/3 of you to present to the world a modicum of vocal ability. Don't make me change the channel to that creepy Lifetime show where kids dirty dance with their parents. Ewwww.
Bottom three, if I had to guess: Elvira Overmyer, Kristy Lee Cook, and either Michael Johns or Dreadlock Castro. Yes, I'm allowed to have four guesses. I could have 11 if I wanted! I'm the boss of me! Now go make yourself a midnight snack and listen to your favorite Beatles album....(now who's the boss of who, sucka?!)
