The Best Birthday Evah!

So last night the top ten went head-to-head with songs from the year of their birth. I thought I'd chime in with my thoughts on the good, the bad and the one we're cuing up "I'm Going Home" for....and I'll avoid any chat about the year of my birth, which would probably involve do wop....

First, the toppermost of the poppermost (nod to John Lennon there) - last night, David Cook just blew me away with his rendition of "Billie Jean." Talk about making a song your own! He totally changed the arrangement and made it a bold rock ballad. Simon said it could have been either insane or amazing. He went with amazing, but from where I was sitting (a bed in New Jersey) it looked like both. Definitely the one to beat, based solely on last night's performance.

Nipping at the heels, Michael Johns gave his best performance ever with "We Are The Champions." Freddie Mercury is a tough act to follow, but Michael did Mercury proud. His was the most memorable performance of the night....until Cook shook things up in the sweet spot.

Unfortunately, there was a huge gap between these two performances and the others. For the third spot in my top three, I'll have to Syesha Mercado, who brought her A game with "If I Were Your Woman." A noble effort, and probably enough to keep her in the competition another week, but her personality has faded and she's not really emerging as a show stopper.

Speaking of which, where oh where has my Brooke White gone? Brooke was my favorite early on, but has faded into the background with her last two performances. Last week, she proved physically awkward with "Here Comes the Sun," while this week's "Every Breathe You Take" was adequate, but nothing special. Her beauty and her personality should buy her another week, but I know she has the talent to be a contender. I miss you, Brooke...come back soon, while you have a chance!

Carly Smithson did an above-adequate job with "Total Eclipse of the Heart," but just didn't bring the wow factor. Jason Castro was nice on Sting's "Fragile" (but nice is almost as bad as boring....we need to pick it up, people!). And Kristy Lee Cook did the smartest thing possible, tying her country twang to mom, star-spangled parades and apple pie with a decent rendition of "I'm Proud To Be An American." If she's gone this week - and she may be - it won't be because of this performance.

Unfortunately, the rest were pretty forgettable. Yes, that includes you, David Archuletta. He sang a song I never heard before, "You're The Voice" and his voice was, as always, decent, but it couldn't end soon enough for me. Can we just rewind last week's performance and watch it again? Cuz this one just doesn't do it for me.

Now, my bottom three - Ramiele, who had the dreaded opening spot and sang "Alone," but not as well as Carrie Underwood; Chickezie, who sang "If Only For One Night" and left his originality at home (too busy carrying the cheese); and the aforementioned Ms. Cook. And it will be Chikezie who had a bad day, unless the first spot proves fatal for Ramiele. (It should be Kristy, of course, but c'mon....how can you send away a blue-eyed blonde singing, "God Bless The USA"?)
