Top 24 Instead

I didn't mean to lie when I said that last night's show would whittle down the competitors to 22. Apparently, Idol producers chose to throw us a curve ball and let 24 through instead. Sorry for not being psychic.

The real shocker was that they didn't stick to the typical 50/50 split and let 15 guys and 9 girls through. And I'm a huge supporter of this decision. Why allow weaker performers through just to fill a quota? Besides, no girl in her right mind would object to a few extra men singing her love songs through her TV screen....

"We always try to be led by the stars of the show and the real stars of the show at the end of the day are the singers of the program. We decided this year that we would pick the best singers that we had and not that we haven't done that in the past, but there was a disproportionate number of good male singers than female singers," said Brunton.

"We wound up having such a huge argument and the judges had such a huge deliberation about the final 22 and there was so many differing opinions on the last two or three people ... that we looked at each other and said, 'Why not make it 24?'"

Check out the recap to last night's show here.

Stay tuned for a rundown of the Top 24. And get ready to vote next week!
